Hi Lex=
The message board may be closed today but then I saw one dated July 13. So good to hear from you and we will call tonight. I meant to ask if there were any similarities in the projects you saw here and the ones in Thailand in terms of how they are organized and how they involve the community. The next part of the trip should be wonderful, too. Take good care. We send our love.

Hey what's up? We miss you here in Chicago. All is well though even though you're not here. It seems as though you're having a good time in Peru and you're learning a lot. Gallery 37 is turning out to be a lot fun. I've met some really nice people and we have our first concert this Fri. I'm a little nervous thought because I have a HUGE solo part!!!! Anyway just thought I would say hi. Tell Wills & Polina I said "hi," take care of yourself!

Que tal happy people?

its me again, with a few thoughts about my experience so far. I thought now would be a good time to reflect on the days back from our four day trip at Cajamarca. In the last few days we had the option of either going to a childrens program in Lima or go to the Care office.

Personally i, at first, didn´t want to go anywhere. we had just gotten back i was tired, etc. But i went, i felt a little gulity for not going, because we are being given all of this on a silver platter. So i and about five others went. The experince was eye opening, up untill then we had only seen rural poverty, this was completely different from what we saw. The poverty which circled the children´s center was very new to us all on this trip. This was urban poverty, what´s the different one might ask? This questions sparks a conversation that lasted about an hour amongst the six of us that went.

Urban vs. rural poverty. And the winner is urban hands down. For the reason of in rural poverty though people so not have much they have each other. They live of the land in a sense, using what´s around them (ie. grass, trees, animals, etc). IF one feels ill and can not continu

Hi Wills, I have been tracking the site pretty closely, although I was out of town Monday. The pics are great! Your entries and those of your friends are really outstanding. It gives the rest of us poor souls left behind in the US a great feel for what the trip is about and some of the great impressions and insights you are gathering up. Anyway, Leslie Shad, CARE's former general counsel and wonderful volunteer, has agreed to host a gathering at home in Evanston for Youth Corps participants, parents, staff, and some donors. Hi Lisa, Loren, and CYC team!!

It was so great to hear from you Lisa! Glad to know that everything is going great, minus the few hiccups... I get tears in my eyes and my heart swells when I read the journal entries, look at the pictures, and read the messages on the board. I sure wish I had such an opportunity as the CYC when I was in high school. CYC team, you are so lucky!! Loren and Lisa, I 've talked with your moms a couple of times and Homar has called too. Everyone is anxiously waiting to hear about your experiences-we can't wait! Of course, we can be patient enough to allow you both to have a full body massage after your return. You two have worked so hard to make the CYC experience so wonderful. I am so proud of you.

All is fine in the Chicago office. The end of the fiscal year stuff went smoothly and Albert has been a great help to Tom and I. Raky's aunt has come to stay with us for a short visit and has been taking care of us grandly--wonderful South Indian cuisine when I come home from work. She has been an ideal guest, and I will miss her when she leaves on Sat.

Take care of each other. Write to you soon.

Hi Everyone!
Just to let you all know, I think what you're doing is very good, you've probably heard a lot about that =). It makes me wish that I was there with you all! I have read all of the Entries through Day 7 and I'm anticipating to hear more great things from all of you! BTW, my name is Albert, and I'm the intern in the Chicago CARE office, provided by the Rotary Club of Chicago, and I just thought to drop a line in the message board. I have heard alot about all of you and its been very, very interesting! Keep up the good humanitarian work, keep in touch, and just hang in there ok? Well, have fun and enjoy your stay, I hope for the best for all of you! God Bless You for your work. =)

it seems i got cut off---

Witnessing such extreme poverty had a huge effect on all group members.

On a brighter note, we spent yesterday visting small buisneses that were started through CARE´s microcredit programs. We saw people making silver, baby clothes, wooden furniture, and sweaters. Not only was it amazing to see how much people were able to accomplish with small loans, but it was also incredible to witness how much CARE had taught these people, through workshops and programs, about organizing a buisness.

I have to go because we have another full day - visting a public school and a meeting at the US embassy.

Greetings from Lima. We´ve been here for two nights already and all of us miss the Cajamarcan country side. It was sad having to leave all our new friends at the CARE Cajamarca office. Last night was the first night of homestays. We are each staying with a CARE staff member and his or her family for two nights. Although we still have group activities to do during the day, we eat dinner and breakfast with our new families. It should prove to be a memorable cultural experience.

Our past two days in Lima have been quite interesting. We visited a shanty town on the outskirts of Lima. Lima is basicaly surrounded by a belt of extreme poverty. The area we visited was probably the most severe poverty any of us had ever seen. People lived in cardboard box type structures, squeezing huge families into these horrible living conditions. It was interesting to see this extreme urban poverty after living in rural poverty of the Cajamarca region. It was obvious that the people outside Lima had it a lot worse. They come to the city in search of new opportunity. Instead, they end up leaving their self-sustainable communities in the country for the impossible struggle of city life. Witn

Hello Dad, Grandma, Eric, Grandad, and all: everything is going well here, and so far the biggest problem (besides finding food without meat) has been trying how to use this spanish keyboard. I still can´t find the apostrophe. I mean, what I just used was an accent mark. That is nice, though--on american keyboards, I can never type in Spanish.

Love to all.

Hi Boo,
How was Cajabamba on Saturday. Dusty still misses you and goes through the house looking for you. I found her laying on one of your smelly baseball socks. Boy, that's love for you (smile). Dad sends his love. Vickie's wedding was beautiful. The family reunion was great. The other family reunion on your great grandfather's side is in Oklahoma on July the 20th. Motherdear(great grandmother) says hi. She's still funnier that ever at 92. Gran (grandmother) says hurry home. We are going to Oklahoma and to Texas when you return for a quick visit. Your grandmother will not be happy unless she sees you for herself. This way she knows you are O.K. Dad read your e-mail and misses having someone to talk about baseball with.

I am going to sign him up on his on
e-mail account so you can write to him. Have a wonderful day. We miss you and love you. Tell all the other kids Hi!.

Our new Rotary high school summer intern, Albert Bautista, has started in the office, and Mary Mucci is here as planned giving officer, starting today! Rachel is off, Mary and Margaret are both in Atlanta, and it's just not the same here without Loren and Lisa! I miss you and am anxious to hear first-hand of your adventures.

Am waiting for word from some volunteer hosts as to whether we can plan a party in August to "officially" welcome all of you back. Will let you know as soon as I have date and place so you can plan on it.

Keep the reports coming -- it's wonderful to hear from all of you. Best of luck,

are y happy? i hope the sheepskin keeps y warm at night and y have sweet dreams.

Loren L. Have read every word each day on the web and have checked out the pictures. Am proud you work for such an inspiring organization, the projects are amazing and should make us all thankful and want to do more to help CARE in the future. The comments from the students are great and it looks like all the planning has paid off. This is more than just a "trip" to Peru it is an opportunity for you all to treasure, keep up with your journal and take photos; tried to call twice Friday without success, miss you, call later in the pm so we can talk.

Hola como estan everyone,
last few days have been none stop fun an excitement. In the last few days i have done so much. Everything from milking cows to making cheese. it really is great the mountains are so beautiful, and the people are the nicest ive met. They have welcomed me and the group into their homes, establishments, stores, etc with open arms. Speaking of which while i was at casa de la juventud we danced with the kids and i got to know one guy when we were there. Before leaving he gave me gift it was a cool hat that i am wearing as i am typing.

anyway everyone here is awesome, lisa is great, and our chaperone loren was the absolute best. Tova is a riot, sarcasm comes easy to her, and kim is a sweet heart. Ruth is perky, like a second mom down here. All the staff at what they do. The other guys my trip are all very interesting, which are great to talk to.

Advice to anybody traveling from the states to Peru forget some things youve heard. Like third world, poor, etc. because eventhough a piece of that is true the culture is so rich that material possessions seem irrelvant. Ive seen more togetherness here than i ever could in the states. Love can repla

Peru is incredible. Our group is finally back to together again. It´s been so cool sharing stories with everyone. The group has really come together; it feels like we´re a family and we havn´t even been together for a week. We had a great day today, partying with local youth at a CARE sponsored youth club. We danced for hours, making friends and exchanging emails with our new friends here in Cajamarca. Just as always, today´s lunch was fabulous. If I don´t have meat and rice at every meal, I don´t know what to do. The food in the Cajamarca isn´t the traditional famous Peruvian seafood, but it is still amazing. As we traveled through the mountains, each family cooked us a new different dish. The meat out here is incredible, spiced perfectly every time. And there´s always strong hot sauce, aji, on the table.

Everyone here is awaiting a great day tomorrow. Although we´ve already spent a few nights here in Cajamarca, we still havn´t had a tour of the city. So, tomorrow, everyone is really excited to tour the beautiful three churches that surround the city´s center. The facades of the churches look so cool. This area is known for its stonework with granite, marble, an

Hi Tom, Rachel, Margaret and Mary!!!!

We´re having a great time!!! I hope all is well. Last night I returned from Cajabamba and Huamachuco where we spent three days seeing CARE in "action" - I am so proud to work for CARE.

Take care,

We´ve had an incredible time in Cajabamba, and Huamachuco and the CARE projects. Our guides were incredible. Lisa was with us, and we ended up calling her Mama Lisa because she was always worrying about us. We also called Enrique, one of our guides, Papa Enrique, because he protected us from all the shady looking guys. We got to be really good friends with him, and he even invited us to his house for dinner tomorrow. Tommorrow we´ll also be going to a party at the house of a woman who works for CARE here. Apparently she has one of the Inca Bath hot springs in her back yard.

This past week has been jammed pack with new experiences for all of us. For example, let me allude to the state of some the latrines by saying I have never missed my bathroom so much before. I also ate trout (i know, mom, a big deal) that had a face looking at me. But the more substantial experiences were found at the CARE project sites across the country of Peru. They illuminated the philosophies of CARE that we had only before discussed in an air conditioned conference room in Chicago. CARE helped, for example, a community find a mixture of cow food, using things they had, that would make their cows grow fatter and therefore more profitable. With this beginning push from CARE, the community can develop on their own and therefore take pride and satisfaction in the results. To really see this process in action, we split upinto three mini groups that ventured to different places. The mini group I was in travelled the six hour viaje over terribly bumpy roads to Cajabamba (I always think of a dance when i hear that name). One thing I immediately noticed as we moved away from the large city of Lima to the smaller towns was the increasing amount of color that this country has.

Hi everyone,
This is Nichole again. To say the least, I´m having a ball. For the past three days I have traveled through the country and the mountains visiting varios cities and communities in Cajabamba, San Marcos, Huamachuco and Cajamarca. I was surprised to see all the work CARE really does for the people. The projects varied from agriculture to forestry and general preservation. Over the three days I planted trees, Built walls, fed cows, and ate trucha (trout)!!!!!! The food has been so good. I was worried at first about losing weight, but I think I´m gaining some instead. To Javier, thanks for the food recommendations. I´ll certainly look out for those dishes. To my family, I´m fine and I love you. I´m going to call soon. Missing everyone in the states and wishing you were here.

Elisa and all of you: Your journal says that in Cajamarca you chopped straw to mix with molasses to feed the livestock through the dry season. Been there; done that! In Kansas, in the mid-1930s, after my father had chopped down all the willow trees along the creek bank so that the sheep and cattle could eat the leaves, the only thing left was to mix molasses with straw for feed for the cattle in particular. Our pastures had dried up to the point where the cattle could not graze, but for the most part, the sheep still could. The sheep got their share of straw and molasses, though.

Rain, high winds and series of tornadoes yesterday in the Twin Cities. 50,000 without power for the weekend. We lost power for 4 hours. Here we are, concerned how we are going to prepare an evening meal, ready to go buy dry ice to keep the full freezer from spoiling if it is shut down all weekend. There you are: With a community doing very well without all the wonderful comforts of a tech-driven world! I'm not suggesting that I want to return to the world of the past, but I am also glad that I have the background of that world in order to survive occasionally in today's world. Or does all of

A "Peruvian American" here. :) Enjoy the wonderful peruvian cuisine. My suggestions for you to check out: the world famous "cebiche" (se-bee-chae) if you can handle 'hot' lemon-marinated fish; Or the shrimp soup called 'Chupe de Camarones'; The creole version of "minestronne" soup: "Menestron" in Spanish; A delicious steak and fries with tomato and onions called "lomo saltado"; A peanut and cheese cream potato entree called "Ocopa" (kind of hot too); A tender marinated pork called "Adobo"; Or visit an original Chinese-Peruvian "Chifa" (Cheefah), that will make you re-think it if you don't care for chinese food. + You can find McDonald's, BK's, Domino's, Sub's around Lima. Take care and shoot a lot of pics: Awesome landscapes!

Hey Wills!

Uncle Bob just e-mailed me to say that one of his close friends, Rich Swanson, has a sister-in-law, Roberta Jacobson, who will be arriving next week as the new U.S. Ambassador to Peru in Lima! Bob told Rich, who will be with Ms. Jacobson this weekend, that you may try to look her up when you are in Lima, which I think would be cool! Your itinerary indicates that, on July 13, your group is scheduled in Lima for a "roundtable discussion with US embassy officials, Director of US AID Peru and Beat Rohr, CARE Peru Country Director." I don't know if Ambassador Jacobson plans to be in that meeting or not. I gave Uncle Bob your web site. Love, Dad

Buenos dias from San Miguel. We arrived here last night after an exhausting and exhilerating day. We departed from Cajamarca early in the morning and watched the sun rise as our truck climbed into the Andes. Our total group has now split into three sections and each seperate group is visiting a different area. We are all awaiting seeing the other groups and sharing the stories of our seperate adventures. The road was like a roller coaster yesterday and as our heads smashed back and forth with every bump on the the road, we were continualy thrilled with each new view from high up in the mountains. San Miguel is at about 2700 meters about sea level, higher than any town in US, I think. The people of this area are mostly farmers and it has been incredible to see the work CARE has done in this area. CARE does a lot of work here with health, education, microcredit programs, and basic buisness training. It was so cool to see how farmers and other people organized their businesses, getting ready to sell their products in the competive local markets. Last night was also very interesting. We got the chance to meet with local leaders of the area and the mayor. The entire meeting

Hi guys
Although we traveled about 5 hours by car, on a mostly unpaved road, yesterday was wonderful. Our day started out with a trip to the local school, where we talked to the kids and participated in making adobe bricks. I opted to keep my feet clean and take pictures instead. We then went to help make marmalade, and we visited a children´s clinic where we weighed and measured babies. We had an excellent lunch, after we walked down to the Magdelena river. After a meeting with the "alcalde" of San Miguel, we ate dinner and were happy to be back in our beds.

So far the trip was great. We have been up at the crack of dawn and traveled hours at a time but for good intentions. We´ve made marmalade and adobe bricks. We visited a school where we performed a delightful ensemble similar to the hokie pokie with the local children. After Wills and I decided to assist in the making of bricks by taking of our shoes and stomping around in the mud for about a half an hour, it was fun... A LITTLE MESSY BUT FUN. To top of the day, we checked into a very interesting hotel to get a good night sleep.

I know you are in Cajamarca now and we look forward to hearing about the projects. Dad and I are running through our foreign film list and we go to NY this Friday. I try to keep my cell on all the time, but I know you are all plenty busy. Have fun and give everyone our best. Buddy says hi and checks out your room periodically!

Hi to Elisa: Your photo is delightful; it sells the trip all by itself. As for us, we're hot; we're humid, and there are more people in the stores today than if it were two weeks before Christmas! Who says everyone in Minnesota goes to their lakeside cabin over the Fourth! Looking forward to chatting with you later in the trip.

Hi you all

Hope you have a good time down (?) there in Peru. I just arrived well here in Switzerland some days ago coming from Chicago (which fact might be of interest for some of you).

Take care

E, what? no messages from J? Don't talk too long on the telephone - international circuits aren't designed for teen phone calls (and I can't afford it!). I can't wait to see journal entries from you guys. I'll bet you are all having a great time (I am, too!).

Wills,

It was great to hear from you last night, even if you did wake up everyone in the house! Your sister is in France and did a 25 mile bike ride and was very tired but in good spirits! Today, we saw a great movie -- Bosa Nova -- with Granny, Poppy and Johnny; you would love the music (Jobim). We miss you and are really looking forward to following your journal entries.

Hey Nik,

That's okay about not calling, Noelle called last night to say you had arrived safely in Miami. Should we keep using the message board to communicate or do you have an email address you're using. We are so excited that you've arrived in Peru and look forward to seeing it through your eyes. If possible, we will continue to communicate through email that way you won't need to use your calling cards. We love you too and a so proud of you! Dad and Bev

Nichole-

We haven't been to the Taste yet, but maybe today we will go for a few seconds and walk around. I'll get a cinnamon roll in your name:) Ricky just came by. He looks a mess. I told Dad how to reach you through this, but I don't even know if I am doing it right myself. Let me know if you get this. I didn't know if I would be able to talk to you like you were talking to us or if we were just going to be writing each other. We love you. Mom is watching as I type this and asking me too many questions. She is trying to learn how to use the computer. (right) We are going to church now-late as usual. Grandpa wouldn't even get up to go today, but he kept calling us asking "Have you heard from Nicky?" Aunt Dot called too but Mom didn't call her back. Warren sends his love and we'll let him know how to contact you. Miss you sweetie and take care. Don't Forget to practice our songs (29 forever).

Hi everyone,
I am the seventeen year old senior from Whitney Young who is having a ball so far on this trip. My name is Nichole and I have to tell you that even though it´s only been one night, the city of Lima is absolutely beautiful. I was rather surprised to see some of the things so far such as Burger King and casinos but other than that the city is very cozy. The hotel we are staying at is more like a bed and breakfast which is really cool. It helped me feel a lot more comfortable being so far away from home. While in Peru we will be busy, but please write me along the way. It will be nice to hear from people back at home. I have to admit I am a little homesick, but I know my family misses me too. I wish you all could be here to experience this trip for yourselves, but I can tell you anything you might want to know. So feel free to write me with any questions or comments. I´ll be very happy to respond. For my personal friends and family, just know I love you and I´m taking care of myself. Oh by the way, the food is pretty good. I was very surprised. I was really concerned about the water and the food, but breakfast was great! I ate well. I´ll keep updating every

Hi, Polina here. This is our first morning in Peru. Except for a slight problem at customs, everything seems to be going wonderfully so far. Our hotel is adorable, and the people are incredibly friendly. We just got done with breakfast, so we haven{t been able to see a lot yet, but we will have a full tour of Lima today. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
