After 30 hours of air travel, our plane descended slowly into the dark cradle of the Kathmandu Valley. The mystery and seclusion of Nepal, the myths of Shangri La, and the remoteness of this tiny kingdom where the spiritual dominates the material came rushing at me as I peered through the dark airplane window at the twinkling tiny lights below.

with rushing taxis, trucks and motorbikes to our hotel, which perched on a small hill near the CARE office. Long porches with wooden columns carved in traditional Nepalese style fronted the rooms.
The next morning, we woke to a clear, cool morning, the air sweet with flowers and wood smoke and the amazing Himalayas encircling us. We spent the first week shuttling back and forth between our hotel and the CARE office conducting the writing workshop for CARE staff.
Then, finally, it was time for us to begin the real adventure.
