Project Information

Project Name:Darfur Emergency Assistance Project
Project Description:
A complex emergency is ongoing in the western part of Sudan. During the past six months, the armed conflict involving various armed militia groups has escalated leaving many dead, more than 1 million internally displaced (IDPs) and 110,000 refugees in neighboring Chad. These war affected IDPs are living in extremely poor conditions, having lost most of their animals, seed stocks and any small amounts of food remaining when fleeing their areas of origin. CARE aims through this project to improve the short-term food security of 387,136 internally displaced men, women, and other vulnerable groups in the localities of Kass, Edd El Fursan, Nyala and Shareia in South Darfur and Wadi Salhi, Mukjar, Zalingei and Jabel Marrah in West Darfur. This will be done by providing adequate food rations to those in need, both IDPs and host communities, with priority given to the most vulnerable. Key activities will include: verification of existing caseloads and registration of new ones; establishing the distribution mechanisms in the camps through the establishment and training of camp distribution committees; ongoing assessments of food security needs; and post-distribution monitoring to ensure actual receipt and use of food distributed by intended beneficiaries.
