Kordofan Region, Northern Kordofan in particular, is facing a complex emergency situation brought about by a combination of environmental, economic and political factors. An overall decline in the national economy, 17 years of civil war and a reduction in external assistance as a result of the political context seriously undermined both the urban and rural populations'' capacity to maintain adequate livelihood security. In addition, three consecutive years of drought have further destroyed people''s coping strategies, resulting in more than half the population being considered moderately to highly vulnerable.
Drawing on its long experience of working in livelihood security in the region, CARE is proposing to implement an Emergency Water and Health Project (KEWHP) in North Kordofan State to complement its existing Food Security and Reproduction Health Care projects. This integrated approach seeks to improve the health status and well being of drought affected people in Bara Council of North Kordofan by reducing the shortages of potable water, food and primary health care services.
The overall goal of the Kordofan Emergency Water and Health Project is andquot; To improve the health status of 130,000 drought-affected people in North Kordofan State through increasing their access to potable water and primary health care services by May 2002.
