At the end of the project, the schools and associations will increase the number of trees in the communes by another 900,000 trees (schools) and approximately 30,000 trees (associations) for a total of about 930,000 trees. This alone can dramatically improve Umutara's sustainable environment. Yet, CARE will not plant trees, without a second important aspect, that being increased knowledge of agroforestry and the environment amongst primary schoolchildren (teachers and school directors) and women's associations.
After three years, the communities will have increased agro-forestry and environmental activities, including nurseries as demonstration plots, advocacy initiatives, etc - all intended to improve Umutara's environment. Specifically for the women's associations, there will not only be increased knowledge, but also increased income-generation. Within the associations, CARE would like to see that the project has also increased confidence, knowledge and leadership abilities in both decision-making and resource management.
At the end of three years, the ten (10) schools and those associations which have had nurseries should have the technical capacity to continue nurseries and tree planting after CARE has discontinued its support. At the end of three years, the associations should have increased income and savings due to a better understanding of these mechanisms.
